The Everest Base Camp trek is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that offers an unforgettable experience. Over 12 days and 65 kilometers each way, you’re in for breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and the sense of accomplishment when you reach the base camp at 5,364 meters above sea level.

If you’re struggling to decide whether to go solo or with a guide, don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. Let’s break down the pros and cons of each option to help you figure out the best choice for your adventure.
🥾The Perks of Trekking Solo:
- Freedom and Flexibility: When you’re trekking on your own, you’re in control. You can hike as fast or slow as you like and take breaks whenever you need. There’s no need to wait for others or worry about keeping up with a group.
- Personalized Itinerary: Solo trekking gives you the freedom to adjust your plans on the fly. The choice is yours if you want to stay a little longer in some of the beautiful villages, to explore some side valleys.
- It’s Cheaper: If you’re on a budget, solo trekking can save you some money. Guided tour packages typically range between $1000–$1400 USD for a standard 12-day itinerary, which might be too pricey for some. Just remember to bring enough cash, as there are no ATMs above Namche Bazaar.
- Easy to Follow Trail: The main trail to EBC is well-marked and easy to follow.
🏞️The Perks of Trekking with a Guide and Porter:
- Supporting the Local Community: When you hire a local guide and porter, you’re directly helping the Sherpa people and the local economy. Trekking without a guide is often frowned upon in Nepal as it doesn’t benefit the community.
- Meet Like-Minded Travelers: Joining a guided trek is a great way to meet fellow adventurers.
- Expert Navigation: While the main trail to EBC is clear, there are some side treks (like Ama Dablam Base Camp or acclimatization hikes) that aren’t always easy to find. A guide will ensure you stay on track and might even take you off the beaten path to explore hidden gems.
- Local Insights: Guides are often full of fascinating stories and knowledge about the area.
- No Stress Over Logistics: With a guide, you don’t need to worry about the details—permits, teahouse bookings, and any other logistics will be taken care of for you. During peak seasons, finding accommodation as a solo trekker can be challenging, but your guide will ensure your stay is guaranteed.
- Weather Contingencies: The weather in Lukla can be unpredictable and often leads to flight cancellations. If that happens, a trekking agency can help rebook your flight, or in some cases, like mine, even arrange a helicopter ride at no extra cost.
Although I love the freedom of solo trekking, I personally recommend going with a local guide for the Everest Base Camp trek. We had an amazing experience with the „Alpine Club of Himalaya „ and were really pleased with their service. If you’re thinking about booking a guided tour, I highly recommend them!
